Core terms
Canonical URL
The preferred URL for a piece of content. It helps search engines understand which address should represent substantially similar pages.
Referring domain
A distinct website that links to your site. Ten links from one website are still one referring domain.
Backlink
A link from another website to a page on your site. Its relevance, placement, destination, and technical status all matter.
Dofollow link
A common industry label for a normal link without a qualifying `nofollow`, `sponsored`, or `ugc` value. It is not a guarantee of ranking improvement.
Nofollow link
A link carrying the `nofollow` relationship value. It may still help people discover a brand and visit the site, but it should not be counted as a followed authority link.
Anchor text
The visible words used for a link. Branded and descriptive wording is usually safer than repeating an exact-match commercial keyword.
Internal link
A link between pages on the same website. Good internal links help people and crawlers find related content.
Structured data
Machine-readable information, usually JSON-LD, that describes visible page content such as an organization, article, breadcrumb, or FAQ.
GEO / answer-engine optimization
The practice of making trustworthy information easy for answer systems to retrieve: clear definitions, direct answers, sources, dates, and consistent entity facts.
Branded mention
A public reference to a company or product, whether or not it includes a hyperlink. It can support discovery and entity understanding, but it is not automatically a backlink.
How to apply these definitions
- Use the canonical URL when sharing a page with a publisher or partner.
- Record the referring domain and live `rel` value when measuring a backlink.
- Use structured data only for facts visible to visitors.
- Prefer clear, sourced answers over keyword repetition.
